Youth in Action!

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Several NYM Youth including Adam & Asante Creek are planning a Dodge Ball Tournament during Spring Break!  Why, you might ask? Because after a discussion on eating healthy and exercising, we discovered that youth who live in poverty are more likely to be overweight.  Overweight people have a higher risk of developing many preventable diseases including type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

After giving the matter some thought, they decided that they wanted to do something to encourage kids to eat wise and exercise especially when they were not in school!  That is how the Dodge Ball Tournament was born!  The Tournament will take place on March 22.  Stay tuned for Details!

Volunteer Income Tax Preparation

Monday, January 14th, 2008

AARP - VITA training is underway to prepare for the 2007 tax season.  Free tax help will be available starting in February at OTWCAC in NYM.  If you know of people outside of NYM, please direct them to free tax preparation sites  in their area so that they are able to have the taxes prepared and e-filed by certified preparers for free.  Volunteers are always encouraged to apply.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - Volunteering and Service

Monday, January 14th, 2008

January 21, 2008, the day honoring Dr. King’s legacy is fast approaching.  Dr. King’s legacy is one of service to others “Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve!”  This philosophy ties in well with the Horizon program mission to use local resources to eliminate poverty.  Together we can all make a difference and improve the lives of people living in our communities by supporting each other and building upon what we already have!

Girl Scout troop 30408 is serving that day by serving lunches at the NYM Senior Citizen Center, and reading and singing and sharing with the residents at the Elders Homes.  I volunteer at Share House on occasion to help the residents with their babysitting needs to attend support groups.  Service comes in many shapes and forms, so pick something you love and share it, or pick something that concerns you and do something about it!

On Monday, January 21, 2008, HONOR THE DREAM, MAKE IT A DAY ON, NOT A DAY OFF.
